Un-CONventional

IKN Banner_Space

The time to be a nerd is now! Well actually the time to be a nerd has been pretty much now for the last 10 years and it doesn’t seem like we will be hitting a slow down at any time in the near future. The true question for the nerd about town is what Convention, or Con for the savvy among you, should you go to?

It all depends on what you are looking for, if you are just in search of the biggest and brightest stars and entertainment, well then maybe one of the larger ones Comic Con San Diego, Dragon Con, New York City Comic Con, even Emerald City Con may be for you. There pop culture meets comics, and you get to see stars from some of your favorite shows and movies. If you are looking for comic books and merch buys there are hundreds of smaller conventions that have exactly what you need! And if you are just looking to start out and maybe work your way to the bigger Cons maybe go to Long Beach Comic Con or Wonder Con to get a taste of what it is all about. Also note I am in Southern California so you should look up smaller Conventions in your region, i.e. Wizard World, Heroes and Villains etc.

There are, in fact, those of us who are professionals at Con going. From packing to planning who you want to see, where you want to go, and how long you can be there, we can pack it all down to a science. Beware though mighty traveler things to occur and plans get broke, and after about 15 years of going to Cons you too can become jaded and burned out. Try to not go to every nerd Con out there, go to a few different ones, mix it up, try to enjoy the floor at larger Cons rather than spending every one of them waiting in a line to hear some folks talk about something you will get to see next year. Also meet people, being a nerdy person can be hard at times, maybe easier now as time goes on, I just know when I was younger it was difficult being an extrovert nerd. So talk to folks, make friends, enjoy other people perspective because meeting folks that are into some of the same stuff you are is awesome!

Water, snacks, and pace yourself. Pack the first two and remember the last one.

Last but not least keep an open mind, you won’t like every fandom, most people can’t as there are just far too many expansive ones to like them all, but that doesn’t mean you can’t merely sit back and enjoy them.

Most of all have fun! This is a vacation not a job, enjoy.

Wonder Woman Was Wonderful, Wondrous Even Spectacular?

WW3

A great movie with a good message, a great story, and solid casting is hard to come by and onder Woman did just that for me. I enjoyed the entire show, I didn’t have a “wow this is lagging” moment and most of all I didn’t stop and wonder where the plot was leading us. We kind of knew where it was going, and with the intro to Diana in BvS we knew where she would end up, but the way the told the first part of her story on how she got there and what jaded her about man’s world is what was fascinating.

Now I have openly heard and argued against some of the complaints about the movie, everyone complains about everything in this world we now live in it is a reality and it sucks. I have also clearly spoken against the “fans” of comics, not all but the loud corner of general haters, as they don’t recall a time when we didn’t have a superhero movie or three every year. It’s a sad reality when you hear people bash a show that actually tries to be unique in its own way, and introduces magic and gods in such a subtle way that it just fits the reality of what DC and Warner Bros are dealing in.

I won’t blow any plot points, or give a critical review, that’s what your mind is for. Go see it and love it or hate it on your own accord, don’t let the “critics” tell you what’s good or bad about it.

Too Many Rangers

By: Michael Worthan

It’s MORPHIN TIME!!!!

If you know that cry you were a child, or an adult who was a fan, when Power Rangers first came on the scene, that was 23 years ago. Now we have a ton of Power Rangers stuff coming back, making a massive resurgence and I’m here to talk about it!

mmpr0011mightymorphinpowerrangers_000_variant_1-50_greenSo if you hadn’t noticed in the last few months there has been a massive influx of Power Rangers happening in the media, and a lot of it is getting the spotlight. With the new Power Rangers movie coming out on March 24th 2017 starring well known vets Bryan Cranston as Zordon, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, and Bill Hader as everyone’s favorite sidekick robot Alpha 5. This take on the Rangers still features five teenagers with attitude heavily, but it also seems to be a darkened version of the campy show we all grew up with, with fans being divided we will just have to wait and see how the new Power Rangers are taken when the movie opens.

Then we have not one, not two, but three different Power Ranger comic books that are up and running right, my favorite of the three is Kyle Higgins take on the Rangers right after Tommy the Green Ranger joined the fold. You see in fighting, temperaments flare, as well as distrust and angst, y’know like real teenagers. It is great storytelling and even though it rides on Power Rangers old tropes of wearing the color of the Ranger you are all the time, Putty Patrollers not being all that useful, and yelling when you morph, it has heart and a great inside story that the show never would have been able to do. The ending of the first arch makes you take a step back and wonder.

The second book, which currently is running, is all about Kimberly the pink Ranger. She is retired, away from home, and some bad things start to go down. Luckily she has Zordon and Alpha 5 in her corner as they re-up the retired Rangers powers and she once again morphs into action. This story brings in some different themes, and rides well with the Pink Ranger being the main character. In general I think this would have made a good TV show if given the proper budget and done well, but it’s just as well it is comic book form.

The third comic book, and one that just started not too long ago, is Justice League vs Power Rangers. The base story is that the Rangers are thrown into the DC Universe and are met by the one and only Justice League. How things go and what truly occurs is not for me to spoil, but youninjasteellogo do get the Versus part almost right away and it is pretty phenomenal.

While all of this is going on we still have the Saban branded show running at full steam with its 23rd season having started on Nickelodeon already, Ninja Steel in America. For twenty three years people have donned the colorful costumes and defended the world against a plethora of different villains. The names and zords may change, but the message always stays the same, Good vs. Evil, with evil sometimes turning good. Its not exactly riveting storytelling but for those of us that like to have some campy fun the shows are always a great watch.

And last but not least, beyond the plethora of merchandise either coming out or soon to be coming out, we have a video game on PS4 and XBox One, that is a side scrolling adventure in the vein of the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, as well as a few other great arcade games. This fun little game can be purchased digitally and it seems like they’ll have some cool DLC content with it so enjoy!

As always share, comment, and never hate.

A Full-Assed Review: Suicide Squad

By: Michael Worthan

Worst heroes ever. One of the main tagines for the Suicide Squad movie kind of sells them short. Although not really heroes our protagonists, El Diablo, Harley Quinn, Dead Shot, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, Katana, and company face a bigger bad than them and come up looking hero-ish in the very end. If you’ve been online you know the stars, you know of the characters, and you know that “professional critics” basically hated the hell out of this flick.

I am in the minority of people that have a website that dug this flick. Was it perfect? Nope. It had spots and flaws and busted logic at times, but I wasn’t looking for a perfect movie, I was looking for a fun movie and I found it. I enjoyed all aspects, the set up for Justice League, the possible meet and fight of the JL and the Squad, and what it could mean for DC Movies. David Ayer did a great job making a movie of the comic book nature that wasn’t just unique, but could essentially pull in its own genre down the line.

Now comes my soap box type rant…The fact that it seems to be ever increasingly popular to bash DC Entertainment and question it’s path. I think Suicide Squad and BvS have started something along with MoS that could essentially lead, under the guideance of Geoff Johns. With Wonder Woman and Justice League on the way we will definitely see some awesome shows. The fact that “fans” still feel like people from DC or Marvel owe them something is a joke. It’s not them it’s you when it comes to the critique and the ever expanding amount of Hollywood that doesn’t give a damn about your complaints.

In other words go enjoy the  movie!

“I Need Friends…”

By: Michael Worthan

As most are aware San Diego Comic Con is here! Unfortunately this year, one of only 3 since 2002, I can not be there. That doesn’t mean I haven’t seen, jeard, or know the big news going on. From the Wonder Woman trailer to the Hulls armor for “Thor: Rangnarok” there is an amazing amount of information flowing in and out of SDCC. So much so that maybe I’ll do a small recap later on down the line after all is said and done, but here I felt I needed to share this with you! The Justice League trailer, finally a trailer DC has put out that isn’t getting bashed straight to hell.
Here is the newly released Justice League trailer.

Enjoy! Comment! Never hate.

Justice League Movie News!

justice-league-movie-logo-slice-600x200

By: Michael Worthan & Mark Patton

We have a little over a year until DC Studios and WB puts out the Justice League Movie, but that hasn’t stopped the almighty machine from trying to build a reputation for it already in the public. After the Batman v. Superman debacle where the fans were split and the critics hated it, DC and Warner are trying to make sure the same does not happen to the rest of their DCU. With the rumor mill swirling about DC did hand us this brief snippet of what we will be looking at when it hits theaters.

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.  Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat.  But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

This description by itself already lightens the mood up a bit with the description. This may very well be what DC/WB have been trying to do by shaking up the order of power a bit and letting Geoff Johns lend more of himself and his ideas and passion for these flicks. And above this little article is the newly released Justice League logo for the flick.

Here’s hoping good things come DC’s way in the next few years!

Here Comes The Sequel!

Injustice 2_Announce Art

By: Michael Worthan & Mark Patton

If you haven’t heard well now here it is, Injustice 2 is coming! I have never been a massive proponent of fighting games, the storylines never really worked for me, but me being the DC Comics fan that I am, I had to try Injustice: Gods Among Us. I loved it, the game is extraordinary, the add-ons were fun and added to the storylines, and I never truly became tired of the gameplay.

“In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios.  “We’re always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customize and level-up their favorite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.”

“Expanding the DC Universe in games continues to be one of our top priorities, and Injustice 2 showcases amazing gameplay and an original story to bring the characters to life for players,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “NetherRealm Studios is offering fans an experience of customizing and battling with DC’s iconic characters in an entirely new way.”

Injustice 2 offers the latest DC fighting game experience that expands on the previous title’s larger-than-life showdowns.  Every battle defines you in a game where players personalize iconic DC characters with unique and powerful gear earned throughout the game.  For the first time gamers can take control of how their characters look, fight and develop across a variety of game modes.

Injustice 2 continues the epic cinematic story introduced in Injustice: Gods Among Us as Batman and his allies work towards putting the pieces of society back together while struggling against those who want to restore Superman’s regime.  In the midst of the chaos, a new threat appears that will put Earth’s existence at risk.  Players can play from the biggest DC roster ever offered in a fighting game, from classic fan favorites such as Batman, Superman, Supergirl and Aquaman, to astonishing new villains like Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd.  Battles will take place across arenas that have evolved in scale and span across iconic locations such as Metropolis, Gotham City and Atlantis.

To celebrate the announcement of Injustice 2, fans who have downloaded the hugely successful Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game can unlock the Injustice 2 versions of Superman and Aquaman through the in-game Challenge Modes.  Released in 2013 and developed from the ground up by NetherRealm Studios, the Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game is available as a free download on the App Store and Google Play.

Below is the game teaser trailer:

Power Rangers, Green Lantern, and DC Comics OH MY!

By: Michael Worthan

Alright well I gather I should start at the beginning, after a few days of things that really didn’t strike up my fancy here we have a few interesting bits of new news. Elizabeth Banks is onset now as Rita Replusa as seen on the website JustJared.com and few other sites around the web.

0011mpr
Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa for the 2017 film Power Rangers.

A solid look at the full costume in broad daylight and I’m pretty excited to see what they do with such an iconic villain, well iconic to those of us that can still dig Power Rangers in one way or another. A new look for her costume, and possibly a slightly grittier version of the once “silly” villain, a plethora of surprises ahead for the new Power Rangers Movie that comes out next year, and this could be something that re-popularizes what Power Rangers once used be to us that remember the original Mighty Morphin version all those years ago.

Now from  colorful Rangers and a green villainess to DC Comics and their Emerald ring slinger the Green Lantern. A “scoop” occurred earlier that said the “Green Lantern Corps” movie would feature not one, but three of the Earth based Green Lanterns out in Sector 2814. Those three would be Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and the young stalwart GL Kyle Rayner. Now if these rumors from the website LatinoReview.com are to be believed out of the six human based GL’s from the Corps, no to mention the very first Green Lantern Alan Scott we are only going to see these three. Personally I don’t believe the0000gl hype, merely because the movie is 4 years away, Green Lantern hasn’t been brought up in the DC Movie-verse yet, and why not Guy Gardener, or possibly throw something new in there with Simon Baz?  With all of the mythos that surrounds the Green Lantern’s and the legacy that it holds to I can see Green Lantern being done better than the last movie, and adding a ton more diversity to what is already a really diverse DC Comics Movie-verse.

Now sticking within DC  we take a turn towards the actual comics themselves. Now over the last decade DC Comics have made quite a few changes. Whether it be the logo, or the costumes of said characters the biggest change came with Flash Point and the introduction of the DC Comics “New 52”, which didn’t really become too popular beyond a few very well written books. So dc-comics-rebirth-2then it became, after a time, “DC You” which saw Commissioner Gordon lose some years, gain some youth, and also gain a giant bunny rabbit eared mech-suit. He began running around, fighting crime, and calling himself Batman, while the real Batman couldn’t remember anything. It was pretty much like that all over DC, Hal Jordan wasn’t a real Green Lantern anymore, etc. So now they are “Rebirthing” the entire franchise, with some old, some New 52, some DC You, and some actually new characters. It will be an interesting mix, and we get to see the return of the old JSA which makes this fanboy very happy.

With all of this going on it is easy to become disenfranchised by everything and start to take how creative some of this stuff truly is. I say to those that are feeling that way to take a step back and try to enjoy the fact that ten years ago we didn’t have half of what he have now as nerds. Alright folks until next time comment, share, follow, but never hate!

Surge Forward Ye’ Mighty Nerds

By: Michael Worthan

Well yesterday was a pretty good day for comic book fandom as a whole, we have learned that Oscar Award winning Director/Actor/Man-Crush Ben “I’m Batman” Affleck is definitely going to do a solo-Batman film. There had been inklings of speak about such a thing occurring, but trusting those rumors is like trusting…well anything said on the internet that hasn’t bee directly quoted or refuted by the companies and people involved.

00000bm
He looks so intense!

This comes as good news during a pretty decent run by Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice at trying to garner 1 Billion Dollars world wide, and especially after the bashing by critics that very same movie took. It looks as if DC/Warner has itself a fairly good amount of confidence going into all of these movies.

Then there is the Benedict Cumberbatch news, which honestly isn’t so much news as it is a really amazing trailer that will now allow magic into the Marvel Universe. I have been waiting for this bit for a while, simply because with the Netflix shows you Have Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil as street level heroes, but then there is Iron Fist who is also pretty street level, but has a mystic background as well. It will be interesting to see how they wholly incorporate the magic without it becoming all encompassing, or too hokey.

If you haven’t seen said awesome magic trailer check it out below.

I hope you guys enjoy the little bit o’ news that I can throw your way. I’ve been rolling as press for well over 12 years now, but this is my first time venturing on my own, so read, comment, enjoy. Never hate though, never hate.
